One of the most asked questions on my blog is how I began Intuitive Eating and questions like, “Can I lose weight will eating this way?” “How do I start?” “I’m really scared to give up calorie counting.”
Here is my guide to Intuitive Eating!

Intuitive Eating means eating according to your hunger cues. Have you noticed that America probably has more diets than any other place in the world, yet we are still one of the most obese nations? Worldwide, obesity is an epidemic. Ironically, in an attempt to reverse that, we have created diet upon diet, nutritional myth upon nutritional myth. People are so confused about what to do. The more diets and nutritional myths they buy into, the worse they feel about themselves because they can’t stick to “The Plan”. Let’s get back to the basics:
Eat when you are hungry, stop when you are comfortably full.
Intuitive Eating is about forgiving and accepting yourself.

Without a doubt, the first step to read the book, Intuitive Eating - Evelyn Tribole & Elyse Resch. That will clear up a lot of misconceptions or beliefs you have about Intuitive Eating, and will help you go about this lifestyle in a healthy and informed way.
Another blog that is incredibly helpful for guiding you through your journey to I.E. is Christie Inge’s blog. She is a weight loss coach and Intuitive Eating coach. Her blog highlights a lot of the concerns and issues that come up specifically for people trying to eat this way.
After you have checked out those resources, you will be well on your way. If you don’t have access to the book, begin by asking yourself:
“Am I hungry? How hungry?”
If you are hungry, then continue:
“Do I want a snack or a meal? Hot or cold food? Creamy or crunchy?”
You know what to do from there. :)

When I first began eating this way, I actually had no hunger cues. I didn’t know what hunger felt like. All the sudden it would come up on me when I started feeling weak and shaky. Soon enough, I started to ask myself periodically, “Am I hungry? How hungry?” and then could learn to catch my early signs of hunger.
In the same way that I didn’t know hunger, I also didn’t know fullness. To me, being “full” actually was what most people would call stuffed. If you have ever had a problem with binging, this may at first be an obstacle for you. There are no obstacles that can’t be overcome, though!
It also took me a bit of time to realize that a big part of Intuitive Eating is just recognizing how food tastes and makes your mind and body feel. It is perfectly okay to eat a little more of something because it is truly delicious. It is also okay to stop eating something because it doesn’t taste good. In a way, Intuitive Eating has made me a bit more snobby about the food I eat, but I am much more satisfied because of this!
Intuitive Eating also doesn’t mean eating a chocolate bar every day. I notice that my body feels really lethargic and I get a really upset stomach if I eat too many sweets, so even if my mind thinks it wants more candy, my intuition tells me that I don’t want it.

You weren’t afraid when some website told you that eating 800 calories a day wasn’t healthy, but you would lose weight. You weren’t afraid when an application told you exactly how many calories to eat each day.
Why be afraid to listen to your own body?
After all, you know when you are hungry. You know when you are full. Maybe you went for an extra long run today … your 1,500 calorie diet (NOEXCEPTIONSWHATSOEVER) doesn’t know that. So EAT!
There are days when I want to give up (mostly times when I overate a bit). I stepped on the scale the other day just to see “the damage” I had done by listening to my body. I had lost weight.
This is not a weight loss plan, but for many, it ends up that way. Calorie counting furthers your obsession with food and will not work in the long run (unless you want to count calories your whole life, every day, then be my guest.)
Yes, it’s scary, but you have support all around you. You are strong enough to push past those doubts that leave you running back to My Fitness Pal.

My ask box is always open if you have questions, comments, concerns, anything!
